CARACAS, Venezuela: Two Florida congressmen said Friday that Washington should be alarmed by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's plans to develop a nuclear energy program while building close ties with Iran.

U.S. Reps. Connie Mack and Ron Klein said in a statement they are concerned Iran has been "an eager partner" willing to help Venezuela develop a nuclear program.

In an interview Thursday with France 24 television, Chavez reiterated his interest in nuclear energy for peaceful uses and defended Iran's nuclear research. The U.S. alleges that Tehran is pursuing nuclear weapons.

"Iran is developing its nuclear energy for peaceful ends, I'm sure of it," Chavez said. "In the same way, Venezuela is also going to start developing nuclear energy."

Mack, a Republican, said Chavez and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's "dangerous alliance, and their desire to develop nuclear technology, should cause great alarm for the United States and its allies in the region." He added: "It's imperative that our allies around the world unite to prevent Chavez from gaining access to new nuclear technology."

Exit Polls: Government Wins Danish Vote -- (AP)

November 13, 2007

Tuesday November 13, 2007 8:46 PM By KARL RITTER Associated Press Writer COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - Denmark's center-right government, buoyed by a strong economy, was headed for re-election Tuesday, according to two exit polls and partial results. Exit polls by commercial network TV2 and public broadcaster DR said Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen's minority government would need support from the small New Alliance party led by a Syrian-born Muslim immigrant to stay in power. The government bloc would get 92 of the 179 seats in Parliament - including five from Naser Khader's New Alliance - while the leftist opposition led by the Social Democrats would get 83 seats, according to the exit polls. TV2's poll was carried out by Megafone, and included 2,000 voters, while 5,000 people were included in DR's survey by Capacent Epinion. In DR's forecast, which was based on more than half of the votes counted, the government bloc had an even bigger margin, with 94 seats to the opposition's... [More]

Musharraf calls for January poll
President Pervez Musharraf has said he hopes new parliamentary elections can be held in Pakistan by 9 January.

He said the Election Commission would determine the exact date of the vote for national and regional assemblies.

The US and UK cautiously welcomed the move and opposition head Benazir Bhutto called it a "first positive step".

Gen Musharraf was addressing his first news conference since declaring emergency rule on 3 November, though he did not say when it would be lifted.

He said imposing the emergency had been his "most difficult decision".

'National interest'

Gen Musharraf's allies abroad and critics at home have been urging him to bring the emergency to an end.

They question whether free and fair elections can ever be held while constitutional safeguards are suspended.

If they want to create anarchy... we must not allow that
Gen Musharraf

However Gen Musharraf insisted he had done nothing wrong and had not violated the constitution.

"I stand by it because I think it was in the national interest."

He said political leaders who had been arrested would be freed but that emergency rule was needed to ensure that the general election went...
